Parliamentary Committee Report Highlights Half of Indian Aircraft Are Faulty; Major Safety Violations Identified

New Delhi: The parliamentary committee has stated that the country's aviation system is facing a very serious crisis. The report, submitted based on an audit conducted by the DGCA, highlighted that recurring technical faults were found in nearly half of the country's aircraft.
Faulty Aircraft: Between January 2025 and February 2026, 377 out of 754 examined aircraft (approximately 50%) had recurring technical issues. A significant portion of the examined aircraft belong to Air India. Among Air India’s 166 aircraft, 137 (82.5%) had serious technical faults. Additionally, more than a hundred safety violations have been reported in Air India. Similarly, 54 out of 101 aircraft in Air India Express also exhibited similar technical issues.
During the audit, the committee noted that nearly half of the total faults were found in these two airlines. The detailed audit conducted by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) following the Ahmedabad aviation accident was also mentioned in the report. The audit identified more than 100 safety violations that require immediate corrective actions.
The committee strongly recommended urgent and fundamental changes to safety arrangements and urged the central government to take stringent measures to prevent the recurrence of such violations, which pose a threat to passengers' lives. These findings have sparked calls for a "fundamental restructuring" of India's aviation safety framework to address these serious concerns and ensure both passenger safety and operational reliability.
