Chlorine Gas Leak at Nagpur Water Treatment Plant; Over 40 Fall Ill

Nagpur: More than 40 people fell ill after a chlorine gas leak at a water treatment plant in Nagpur’s Godhni area early Monday, prompting authorities to evacuate residents and launch a multi-agency emergency response.

The leak was reported around 1 am at the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran’s Godhni Municipal Council Water Treatment Plant. Chlorine reportedly escaped from a cylinder with a capacity of 900 kg and spread towards nearby residential areas.

Several residents complained of coughing and breathing difficulties following the leak. Authorities advised people living close to the facility to move to safer locations as emergency teams reached the area.

According to reports, security personnel evacuated residents within a 200-metre radius of the plant and secured the area. While some affected residents went to hospitals on their own, others were taken for medical treatment by the police.

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) officials said multiple agencies were involved in containing the leak. Fire personnel reached the plant with two water tenders and breathing equipment. Teams from Orange City Water Pvt Ltd (OCW), which manages Nagpur’s drinking water supply, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also joined the operation.

The leak was brought under control by around 5.30 am.
