New Delhi: The CITU has congratulated the power employees and engineers in Haryana for their successful strike against privatisation of the electricity distribution sector. The BJP government was forced to issue a policy directive under Section 108 of the Electricity Act and declare that privatisation would not be allowed, following opposition to the parallel distribution licence granted to Eleven Power Private Limited in Gurugram and Nuh.

In a statement, CITU general secretary Elamaram Kareem described the outcome as an unprecedented victory against the move to open up public-sector electricity distribution to private profiteering.

Nearly 50,000 workers participated in the 48-hour strike. Despite disruptions to electricity and drinking water supplies for several hours, farmers’ organisations, other trade unions and ordinary people extended their support to the agitation.

The solidarity demonstrated that working people would not allow public service institutions to be undermined for the profit of private companies, CITU said.

The organisation also called for celebrations across the country to mark the success of the strike.
