Safety guidelines for the public
1. People living in areas prone to landslides, mudslides and flash floods should move to safer locations in accordance with instructions from the authorities.
2. Residents along riverbanks and in areas downstream of dams should also assess the risk and relocate as directed by the authorities.
3. People living in disaster-prone areas should confirm whether relief camps have been opened in their localities and move to them during daylight hours. They can contact local self-government institutions and revenue authorities for assistance.
4. As strong winds are possible, people living in poorly secured houses or homes with weak roofs should exercise particular caution. Anyone who believes their home is unsafe should contact the authorities and move to a safer location as a precaution.
5. The public should also be alert to the risk of trees being uprooted and electric poles collapsing in strong winds. Precautionary measures issued by the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority are available at https://sdma.kerala.gov.in/windwarning/.
6. During heavy rain, people must not attempt to cross rivers or enter rivers and other water bodies for bathing, fishing or any other purpose.
7. People should not climb onto bridges over water bodies to view the surroundings, take selfies or photographs, or gather in groups.
8. Non-essential travel should be avoided entirely when rainfall intensifies. Tourist trips to waterfalls, water bodies and hilly areas should be suspended until the rain warning is lifted.
9. Extra caution is advised when travelling on roads alongside water bodies and on roads where repair work is under way. The risk of road accidents may increase during extremely heavy rainfall. Vehicles must not be driven through areas where water bodies are overflowing.
10. Dangerously positioned trees, poles, signboards and walls in public and private spaces should be secured, and trees should be pruned where necessary. Any hazardous conditions should be brought to the attention of the authorities.
