WhatsApp and Similar Apps to Stop Working Without an Active SIM

Messaging apps like Telegram and WhatsApp will stop working if the SIM card is removed. The order issued by the central telecom department for this purpose is set to expire on February 28. Companies have been advised to implement the reform by that date.
Currently, while installing apps like WhatsApp, SIM verification is required. However, it was not mandatory for the SIM card to remain active for continued use. This loophole has been observed to cause errors and facilitate crimes such as SIM cloning, which is why the revision has been proposed.
The feature that allows users to continue using the app via Wi-Fi or other networks even after removing the SIM card is changing. Going forward, users will need to either deactivate the SIM or keep it active on the network.
The proposal is to change the technical settings so that the app cannot be used without the SIM card. The app should stop working if the SIM is changed on the phone. UPI and banking apps already follow this model; for instance, without a registered SIM in the phone, one cannot use Google Pay. The proposed change aims to implement a similar system.
This system is already being followed by some apps. There is also curiosity about how this will affect web versions. The suggested revision requires scanning and re-establishing the SIM connection every six hours on desktops.
