Kolkatta: The Election Commission has released the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) as the stage is set for the assembly elections in West Bengal. According to the voters’ list, the total number of voters in the state has reduced from 7.66 crore to 7.08 crore.

More than 58 lakh voters were removed from the list, citing reasons such as death, change of permanent residence, duplication, and absence of address. This is the first time since 2002 that such a comprehensive check has been carried out in the state. The published list categorises voters into three groups: approved, deleted, and under adjudication.

The voting rights of around 60 lakh people are currently in crisis. The names of these voters are in the ‘re-verification’ category due to logical discrepancies. Their documents are being examined by judicial officers, as per the Supreme Court’s directives.

The Election Commission has stated that in the coming months, supplementary voter lists (Supplementary Rolls) will be published in stages, as decisions are made regarding voters under review.

As per the Supreme Court’s directions, the published list is considered the Final Roll. The draft list was published on December 16, 2025. The final roll has now been released after completing all objections and hearings related to it. For the 6 million voters currently under adjudication, further supplementary rolls will be published in the coming months. Once these are included, the complete voter list for the assembly elections will be ready.

Currently, not everyone listed in the roll is eligible to vote. Only those whose names are marked as ‘Approved’ can exercise their voting rights. If a name is under ‘Adjudication’, it means additional verification is required before voting rights can be confirmed.
