21 Killed in Massive Fire in West Bengal, 28 Still Missing

Kolkata: At least 21 people were killed in a massive fire that broke out at a momo manufacturing unit and adjoining warehouses in Anandapur, West Bengal. The incident occurred on the night of Sunday, January 26, according to police. Twenty-eight people are still missing, and officials warned that the death toll could rise as search operations continue.
The total number of fatalities rose to 21 after 13 more bodies were recovered today from the charred buildings. Rescue teams are continuing their search for those missing amid the debris.
The fire broke out at the production unit of a well-known momo company operating in Anandapur in South 24 Parganas district, along with two nearby godowns. Many of the bodies were found burned beyond recognition, prompting authorities to begin DNA mapping tests to establish the victims’ identities.
Following the tragedy, prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNS have been imposed in the area. The restrictions were enforced to prevent any law-and-order issues ahead of a proposed visit by Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. Adhikari has approached the Calcutta High Court seeking permission to visit the site.
Preliminary findings suggest that the establishment was operating without adequate safety arrangements.
