BJP Leader Suvendu Adhikari’s Divisive Remarks After Bengal Election Victory, Says Would Work Only for Hindus in Nandigram

Kolkata: Following the West Bengal Assembly election victory, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari made controversial and divisive remarks, stating that he would work only for Hindus in Nandigram.

Adhikari claimed that it was the Hindu voters of Nandigram who ensured his victory, claiming that Muslim votes in the constituency went entirely to the Trinamool Congress. He also told the media that the Trinamool Congress would “disappear within 24 hours.”

Adhikari defeated former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur and TMC leader Pabitra Kar in Nandigram. The BJP went on to capture power in the state, ending the Trinamool Congress’s decade-and-a-half rule. Mamata Banerjee lost from her stronghold Bhabanipur by a margin of 15,114 votes.

Riding on strategies such as SIR and intense communal polarization, the BJP secured 207 out of 294 seats. The Trinamool Congress won 80 seats. CPI(M) candidate Mustafizur Rahman won in Domkal, while the Congress secured two seats.
