Supreme Court Emphasises Strict Protection of Sexual Assault Victims' Identities

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has taken a strict stance against disclosing the personal details of victims of sexual assault. The Court stated that disclosing the names or other identifying details of such victims is a legal offense, and repeating such actions is a serious matter.

The Court emphasised that revealing such information would violate the privacy and dignity of the victims. It also expressed concern over the trend of disclosing victims' names in police records, court judgments, and media reports, despite the existence of laws to prevent this.

The Court further stated that direct mention of victims' names in FIRs, charge sheets, and court orders should be avoided. It should be ensured that the identities of victims are protected while reporting news. Even unintentional disclosure of such information is punishable.

The Supreme Court directed all high courts and state governments to ensure that proper guidelines are followed in this regard. The Court also reminded that it is the duty of the state and judiciary to create an environment where victims can live with dignity in society.
