New Delhi: CPI M Rajya Sabha MP Dr. V Sivadasan has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging immediate intervention to roll back the steep hike in passenger ship fares to and from Lakshadweep. Expressing serious concern, he described the fare revision as arbitrary and a heavy blow to the island’s residents who rely heavily on these services for travel, healthcare, education, and essential supplies.
Dr. Sivadasan pointed out that the fare hike was imposed without public consultation or advance notice, leaving islanders struggling with additional financial burdens. The new fares have increased Bunk Class tickets on the Kochi–Kavaratti route from 330 to 470 rupees, and First Class from 3,510 to 4,920 rupees, rates that are unaffordable for a large section of the population.
The MP also highlighted the current crisis in connectivity, with only two vessels operating while several remain inactive. This has severely impacted passenger movement and disrupted the supply of essentials, leading to inflation and scarcity across the islands.
He expressed deep disappointment that such a major policy decision was taken without consulting local communities or elected representatives. "This is a clear departure from democratic norms and administrative sensitivity," Dr. Sivadasan stated.
In his letter, he urged the Union Home Minister to immediately review and roll back the fare hike and ensure the swift repair and redeployment of non-operational ships. He also called for travel concessions for students, patients, and economically weaker sections who are most affected by the crisis.
Dr. Sivadasan concluded by stressing that the situation demands urgent action to relieve the hardships of Lakshadweep residents and to restore reliable access to essential services through transparent and inclusive decision-making.
