New Delhi: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav informed the Lok Sabha that passengers will have to pay if they carry luggage beyond the prescribed limit during train travel. He was responding to a question by MP Prabhakar Reddy on whether luggage regulations similar to those at airports would be implemented for train passengers.
Currently, a maximum luggage allowance is set according to the class of travel. According to the figures provided by the minister:
Second Class: Up to 35 kg can be carried free; charges apply for luggage up to 70 kg.
Sleeper Class: Up to 40 kg free; charges apply for up to 80 kg.
AC Three-Tier or Chair Car: Free allowance is 40 kg.
AC Two-Tier: Free allowance is 50 kg; maximum limit is 100 kg.
AC First Class: Up to 70 kg free; charges apply for up to 150 kg.
Trunks, suitcases, boxes, or other luggage exceeding these limits must be transported in booked parcel vans (SLR). The minister clarified that such items should not be carried in passenger compartments.
