New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has temporarily stepped back from presiding over the lower house of Parliament amid no-confidence motion seeking his removal by opposition.

The decision follows the formal submission of a no-confidence notice by opposition MPs who accuse Birla of biased conduct and procedural unfairness during the ongoing Budget session. The notice has been sent to the Lok Sabha Secretary-General for scrutiny, triggering a constitutionally mandated process before any resolution on the Speaker’s removal can be debated on the floor.

Opposition parties stated that Birla’s conduct has repeatedly disadvantaged opposition voices in Parliament. Specific complaints cited in the notice include the denial of adequate speaking time to the Leader of the Opposition, allegations that key opposition leaders were prevented from completing their speeches, and the suspension of several opposition MPs.

In anticipation of the formal debate on the notice, Birla has refrained from chairing Lok Sabha proceedings until the notice is formally considered and procedural questions are resolved.
