Srinagar: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday raised serious concerns about the safety of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal, calling for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to place the weapons under international supervision. Describing Pakistan as an “irresponsible and rogue nation,” Singh warned that its possession of nuclear weapons poses a significant threat to global security.
Singh made these remarks during his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Speaking to soldiers at the Badami Bagh Cantonment in Srinagar, and accompanied by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the Defence Minister issued a direct challenge to the international community.
“From the land of Srinagar, I ask the world—are nuclear weapons safe in the hands of such an irresponsible and rogue nation?” Singh said. “Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal must come under IAEA supervision.”
Singh’s comments come in the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 tourists. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor a large-scale precision military strike targeting terror infrastructure across the Line of Control.
He emphasised that the operation fulfilled a long-standing pledge made by Indian soldiers—to dismantle terror hideouts regardless of where they exist. “India has faced cross-border terrorism for over three decades. The world now knows we will go to any length to end it,” Singh declared.
Paying tribute to those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam attack and during the military operations that followed, Singh addressed the troops with solemn pride. “I bow to the supreme sacrifice of our brave jawans. I understand the pain and anger that followed Pahalgam. But you channelled that emotion into strength, responding with wisdom and courage.”
Turning to Pakistan’s economic troubles, Singh said, “Once again, Pakistan has gone crawling to the IMF for a bailout. It now stands in the queue of beggars, while India is among the countries that contribute to the IMF to help struggling nations.” Concluding his address, Singh praised the Indian armed forces for their valor and discipline.
