Chennai: The Madras High Court has categorically stated that AI tools, including ChatGPT, cannot replace qualified teachers, observing that while artificial intelligence has approached human intelligence in many aspects, it cannot impart honesty and ethics — qualities the court described as indispensable tools in the legal profession. The observation was made by a bench comprising Justices S M Subramaniam and N Senthilkumar.

The court also ruled that attendance concessions cannot be granted to law students with poor attendance, noting that regular classroom attendance yields benefits that cannot be replicated otherwise. The observations came as the court allowed appeals filed by Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University against a single bench order that had granted relief to students. The court pointed out that the Bar Council of India's Rule 12 mandates a minimum attendance of 70 per cent.
