New Delhi/Hyderabad: CPI(M) General Secretary M A Baby has criticised the Telangana government’s reported decision to name a road adjoining the US Consulate in Hyderabad after US President Donald Trump, calling the move politically inappropriate and inconsistent with India’s anti-imperialist legacy.

In a statement posted on X, Baby drew a comparison with a historical decision taken in Kolkata during the Vietnam War period, when a road near the US Consulate was renamed in honour of Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh. He argued that public symbolism in India has traditionally reflected opposition to imperialism and foreign military intervention.

Criticising the proposed renaming, Baby alleged that the move comes at a time when the United States is involved in military conflicts and interventions in different regions. He described Trump as representing an aggressive foreign policy approach and questioned the decision to honour him through a public landmark.

The CPI(M) leader also referred to a recent maritime incident involving Indian sailors and accused the Union government of failing to respond strongly. He alleged that the Centre had remained silent despite developments affecting Indian interests and argued that such actions reflected a weakening of India’s independent political position.

Baby further criticised both the BJP-led Union government and the Congress government in Telangana, alleging that they were compromising India’s sovereignty and self-respect.

He urged the Congress leadership to intervene and ensure the decision is withdrawn. He said political claims of carrying forward India’s anti-imperialist traditions should be reflected in actions and not remain symbolic statements alone.
