New Delhi: The Central government has made biometric Aadhaar e-KYC mandatory for consumers to continue receiving domestic LPG cylinders at subsidised household rates. Consumers who fail to complete the verification process by August 16 will not be supplied 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinders at household rates until the formalities are completed.

The move has drawn criticism for imposing a deadline without providing adequate time or effective alternatives for senior citizens and those with limited digital literacy. Consumers have received messages stating that domestic LPG cylinders will not be supplied at household rates unless Aadhaar-based e-KYC is completed. The directive applies to customers of all major oil marketing companies, including Indian Oil, HP Gas and Bharat Gas.

Consumers can complete the e-KYC process through the IndianOil ONE app, by visiting their LPG distributor, or through the delivery personnel using handheld authentication devices. Customers receiving LPG subsidies directly into their bank accounts will also temporarily lose the subsidy if they do not complete the e-KYC process. The notification has been issued to both PM Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries and regular domestic LPG consumers.

The Centre had first directed LPG consumers to complete e-KYC in 2024. However, as it was not mandatory at the time, a large number of consumers did not complete the process. The latest directive follows earlier increases in LPG prices and reductions in subsidy support.

The Central government has defended the decision, saying it is intended to verify eligible consumers and ensure the secure distribution of LPG subsidies. It also forms part of efforts to streamline beneficiaries under subsidy schemes, including the PM Ujjwala Yojana. At present, only consumers who have completed e-KYC are eligible to receive LPG subsidies.

The deadline has also raised concerns for households facing practical difficulties, such as cases where the registered LPG connection holder has died and ownership transfer procedures are still pending.

Ways to Complete LPG e-KYC:

  1. Online using the LPG company's mobile application along with the Aadhaar Face RD application.

  2. By visiting the authorised LPG distribution agency in person.

  3. Through the handheld authentication device carried by the LPG delivery agent during cylinder delivery.
