Korba (Chhattisgarh): At least nine workers were killed and around 40 others injured in a boiler explosion at a power plant owned by the Vedanta Group in Korba district of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday evening.

The explosion occurred while the plant was operational, triggering a massive blast that caused part of the facility to collapse. Preliminary reports indicate that over 100 workers were present inside the plant at the time of the incident.

Emergency response teams, including police and fire services, rushed to the site and began rescue operations immediately. Authorities are continuing efforts to determine whether more workers remain trapped under the debris.

The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals, with several reported to be in critical condition.

Worker unions have alleged serious lapses in safety standards at the plant, claiming that inadequate maintenance of the boiler may have led to the explosion. Calls for a high-level inquiry into the incident have intensified.

Following the accident, relatives of workers and local residents gathered outside the plant, staging protests over alleged safety failures. Protesters have demanded adequate compensation for the victims’ families and strict action against those responsible.

The Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh expressed condolences over the loss of lives and directed district authorities to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured. Additional security forces have been deployed in the area to maintain order.
