Kokrajhar, Assam: A man was killed and four others seriously injured in a mob attack, allegedly triggered by suspicion of cow -related theft, in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Monday night, police said on Tuesday.
The victims, associated with an ongoing road construction project, were returning late after inspecting a work site in the Aoudang area. As their vehicle reached the Gouri Nagar–Mashing Road stretch, a group of villagers tried to stop them, suspecting them of cattle theft. During the confrontation, the vehicle reportedly skidded off the road, after which the mob attacked the occupants and set the vehicle on fire, leaving them with severe burn injuries.
All five victims were rushed to Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital, where one, Sikhna Jwhwlao Bismit alias Raja, succumbed to his injuries. He was the son-in-law of contractor Moranda Basumatary, associated with the road project. Four others, Prabhat Brahma, Jubiraj Brahma, Sunil Murmu, and Mahesh Murmu, remain hospitalised, with doctors describing Prabhat Brahma’s condition as critical.
Police, Fire, and Emergency Services intervened to bring the situation under control, though tension continues in and around Kokrajhar. Several people have been detained for questioning, and an investigation is underway.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over cow-related vigilantism in Assam, which has escalated in recent years following the BJP’s rise to power in the state.
