New Delhi: CPI M Rajya Sabha member John Brittas has written to Shri Manishi Chandra, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Cell, Delhi, demanding registration of an FIR over cyber attacks directed at Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and relatives of those killed in the Pahalgam terror strike.
In his letter dated August 22, Brittas enclosed screenshots, web links and press clippings to show what he described as “a concerted campaign of online harassment and vilification.” He said the material clearly pointed to cognizable offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.
The MP reminded the police that under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, once information on a cognizable offence is received, an FIR must be registered. “To insist that proof must be furnished by the victims themselves is contrary to the spirit of Section 173 BNSS,” he noted.
Brittas said the abusive posts had already been reported widely in the media and were admissible as evidence. According to him, Misri was forced to restrict visibility of his posts on X (formerly Twitter) due to the trolling.
He also highlighted the abuse faced by Ms. Himanshi Narwal, widow of Lt. Vinay Narwal, and Ms. Arathi, daughter of slain tourist N Ramachandran. Both, he said, were targeted for appeals that stressed communal harmony and gratitude towards locals who had helped them.
“The seriousness of these attacks cannot be overstated. They target not only one of the nation’s seniormost diplomats but also grieving families of terror victims,” Brittas wrote.
