Jamia Millia Islamia Management Deploys Security Staff to Crack Down on Students’ Protest for Union Restoration

New Delhi: The management of Jamia Millia Islamia University is attempting to suppress a student protest demanding the restoration of the students’ union. Security personnel have been deployed to attack students and dismantle their protest tent.
Tensions escalated at the protest site after security personnel attempted to attack the students. The students had taken to the streets demanding the restoration of the students’ union. Not only have the authorities refused to accept their demand, but they have also cancelled the celebratory events planned as part of the university’s foundation day, including the ‘Taleemi Mela’.
The events, scheduled to be held from October 29 to November 1, have been cancelled. Students began an indefinite hunger strike on October 12, demanding fresh elections to the students’ union, which was dissolved in 2006.
An attempt by Delhi Police and security personnel to remove the protesting students had earlier led to major clashes. In a message sent to department heads and deans announcing the cancellation of the event, the university’s Dean of Students’ Welfare communicated the decision.
The students have not received any official notification about the cancellation. They are also refused to accept the recommendations put forward by a seven-member high-level committee appointed by the university. The students remain firm in their demand for the restoration of the union through democratic elections.
With tensions continuing on the campus, the university has decided to conduct all classes through online mode.
