Indore: In a fresh water contamination incident in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, 22 people have fallen ill after consuming polluted drinking water. This comes just weeks after 23 people died and several others were hospitalised due to similar contamination from water supplied by the BJP-run municipal corporation.
The latest cases have emerged from the Moho area, where 22 residents reported falling sick after consuming tainted water. Nine of them have been admitted to hospital, while the remaining patients are receiving home treatment under the supervision of health officials. Authorities have warned that more cases may surface from nearby areas as the situation is still being monitored.
Following reports from the affected localities on Thursday night, the administration took immediate action. District Collector Shivam Verma visited the hospital and deployed health teams to the area. Health department teams have been running emergency medical camps since Friday morning, providing urgent care and closely monitoring the situation in the worst-hit areas.
In response to the new cases, local authorities began surveying the affected areas from Saturday morning. So far, 25 people have died after consuming the contaminated water. The Madhya Pradesh High Court had earlier expressed strong displeasure over continuing deaths in Indore, which is known as one of the cleanest cities in India.
Preliminary investigations suggest that leaks in the main drinking water pipeline allowed sewage contamination to enter the water supply. Complaints about poor-quality water supplied via pipelines from the Narmada River had been widespread. The state government and High Court have acknowledged that the mass deaths were caused by the presence of E. coli bacteria in the drinking water.
