New Delhi: The tragedy in Indore, where sewage contaminated drinking water and led to the deaths of fourteen people, has brought the BJP’s governance model at the corporation level under scrutiny. In 2025 alone, the BJP -run corporation received a total of 266 complaints regarding drinking water issues. Of these, 23 official complaints came from Zone 4, which includes Bhagirathpur. The failure to provide permanent solutions to these complaints was a key factor behind the disaster.

Following the incident, the National Human Rights Commission took suo motu action and issued a notice to the Madhya Pradesh government. Laboratory tests confirmed that contaminated drinking water was the direct cause of the tragedy. Meanwhile, the state and corporation authorities have been hesitant to disclose the exact number of casualties. While local media report fourteen deaths, the corporation’s official count lists only ten.

Indore, known as one of India’s cleanest cities, faced the disaster due to toilets built without septic tanks. Investigations revealed that waste from these toilets had been diverted into trenches above the drinking water pipelines. The sewage then seeped into the drinking water through the joints of damaged pipes. The corporation had earlier identified the pipelines as dilapidated and in need of replacement. Although some preliminary steps were taken, the actual work to replace the damaged pipes never commenced.

Uma Bharati Criticises BJP

BJP leader and former Chief Minister Uma Bharati strongly criticised both the Madhya Pradesh government and the district administration over the tragedy. She stated that the BJP government was directly responsible for the disaster. Speaking on compensation for the victims’ families, she emphasised that the value of a human life cannot be measured in two lakh rupees. She called on the authorities to apologise to the victims and take action against the guilty, irrespective of their position.

Family of Six- Month -Old Child Refuses Compensation

The family of a six-month-old boy who died in the disaster refused the compensation offered to them. “Will compensation bring him back to life? No amount is greater than the loss of a child,” said the child’s grandmother, Krishna Sahu. Avyan Sahu was born after ten years of anticipation, only to be tragically lost within six months.
