New Delhi: Delhi Police have tightened security and put traffic restrictions in place across central Delhi ahead of football icon Lionel Messi’s visit, which marks the final leg of his GOAT tour of India.
Messi is scheduled to attend an event at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday between 1 pm and 4 pm. His India tour began in Kolkata, where large crowds and poor crowd control led to chaotic scenes. In contrast, the events held later in Hyderabad and Mumbai were conducted without major disruptions.
With the experience in Kolkata in mind, Delhi Police have placed the city on high alert. Senior police officials said elaborate arrangements have been made, with emphasis on crowd management, controlled entry and smooth traffic movement to ensure public safety.
A multi-layered security setup has been deployed in and around the stadium. Several security rings have been established, with additional police personnel and paramilitary forces stationed at key points. Entry into the stadium and surrounding designated areas is being strictly regulated, and only pass holders are being allowed access.
Anti-sabotage checks, frisking points and round-the-clock CCTV surveillance form an important part of the security measures. Quick reaction teams, senior supervisory officers and emergency response units will remain on standby throughout the event, police said.
Traffic restrictions have also been enforced in the area. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Nishant Gupta said three parking zones have been identified for labelled vehicles, including P1 near Vikram Nagar. Vehicles without labels must be parked at the Rajghat Powerhouse parking area or Mata Sundari Lane, from where people can walk to the stadium.
Users of app-based taxis have been advised to alight at Rajghat Chowk and proceed on foot. Parking around the Arun Jaitley Stadium has been completely banned, and vehicles parked in restricted zones will be towed and fined, police warned.
The public has been urged to rely on Metro services and buses to minimise congestion. Police expect a rise in public movement from around 11 am and have advised commuters to avoid Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, ITO, Delhi Gate, Netaji Subhash Marg and Brijmohan Chowk from 10 am until the event concludes.
