FSSAI Issues Nine Notices to Swiggy Instamart Over Food Safety Violations

New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken stringent action against online delivery platform Swiggy Instamart for food safety law violations, issuing nine notices to the company under the Food Safety Act, 2006, following widespread consumer complaints. Swiggy has been asked to submit a detailed explanation and compliance report, and has been warned of strict legal action if it fails to do so.
The main complaints from consumers related to the delivery of expired and spoiled food items through Swiggy Instamart. Among the specific violations found: "Nos" eggs were being marketed under a brand name not approved in the existing FSSAI licence, and authorities have directed that the product not be sold without the necessary licence amendment. "Healthify 100% Whey Protein 1 kg" and "Noise Homestyle Madras Mixture" were found to have been distributed even after their expiry dates. Rotten eggs emitting a strong foul odour were also found to have been delivered.
Despite consumer complaints, the company had taken no corrective steps. Swiggy Instamart has been asked to submit a detailed report with written evidence on the circumstances that led to the complaints, along with information on the internal controls currently in place regarding product quality assurance, inventory management, stock rotation, storage systems and hygiene.
