New Delhi: The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has strongly condemned the violent crackdown by the Union Territory administration in Ladakh, calling it a “brutal repression” against the local population. The party said the violence has led to the deaths of four people and left several others injured.
The CPI M highlighted that the people of Ladakh have been demanding statehood with a fully empowered legislature and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution for the past six years. These demands, the party said, have been repeatedly ignored by the BJP-led central government.
The party noted that in frustration over the government’s inaction, the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and other local organisations launched a 15-day peaceful hunger strike. Instead of dialogue, the central government responded with forceful arrests, which escalated protests and unrest in the region. CPI M criticised the government for blaming the agitators despite creating the conditions for violence in a traditionally peaceful area.
The party has urged the central government to immediately stop all repressive measures and engage in meaningful negotiations with the representatives of the movement. It has also demanded adequate compensation for the families of those killed and for those injured in the crackdown.
