Sakti (Chhattisgarh): Seventeen hours after a deadly boiler explosion at a thermal power plant owned by Vedanta Limited, anxious families continue to wait outside the facility, desperate for information about their loved ones.

The explosion occurred at 2.35 pm on Tuesday at the plant in Sakti district. According to latest reports, at least 16 people have been killed, while around 20 others remain in critical condition.

Uncertainty persists as authorities have yet to release an official list of the deceased or injured. Families gathered outside the plant and hospitals say they have received no clear communication from either the management or the administration.

Among them is Ravindra Ram, who rushed to the site searching for his brother, Ramu, who was on duty when the explosion occurred. A migrant worker from Sonbhadra in Uttar Pradesh, Ravindra said he learned about the incident while at a railway station on his way home.

“Some say my brother has died, others say he is injured and in hospital. But no one is giving us confirmed information,” he said, breaking down.

Rescue operations began immediately after the blast, with teams from the State Disaster Response Force deployed at the site. Sakti Superintendent of Police Prafulla Thakur confirmed that 34 workers were pulled out from inside the plant, including the 16 deceased and critically injured.

A majority of those affected are believed to be migrant workers from neighboring states such as Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Families have been seen moving between hospital corridors and the plant gates, holding photographs of missing relatives.

Workers have alleged negligence by plant authorities. Ravindra claimed that employees had reported unusual dust emissions from the boiler days before the explosion, but were told it was “normal.”

In the aftermath, fear has gripped the workforce, triggering a mass exodus of labourers from the plant. Many workers are leaving their jobs, citing safety concerns.

“What is the point of staying here after such a tragedy? Life is more important than money,” said Dileep, a worker from Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh, as he left the site.

Search operations are still ongoing to locate more victims under the debris. The state government has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident, including a probe into possible violations of safety norms at the plant.
