New Delhi: Faced with nationwide student protests over the Class 12 re-evaluation controversy, the central government and CBSE authorities have been forced to back down. With today's deadline for submitting revaluation applications set to expire, authorities were compelled to extend it to midnight tomorrow. CBSE has claimed the extension was granted in response to student requests, but it is widely seen as a damage-control measure in the face of mounting public outrage.
Thousands of students had been unable to even file applications after CBSE's website crashed in the wake of widespread errors in the examination results. Authorities have now floated a new claim that the website failures were caused by a cyberattack — a narrative widely viewed as an attempt to deflect accountability. Reports indicate the central government is now maneuvering to use a Delhi Police investigation into the alleged cyberattack as cover to escape scrutiny.
As the scale of the academic misconduct became impossible to contain, the central government was also forced to abruptly transfer the CBSE Board Chairman in an apparent bid to manage public anger.
The deadline extension is being seen as a significant victory for the student collectives that have been fighting back against the establishment's failures. Protests have spread across the country against the central government's dismantling of the public education system as part of its right-wing policy agenda.
