CBI Moves Supreme Court to Challenge Bail of Kuldeep Singh Sengar in Unnao Rape Case

New Delhi: The CBI has approached the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court order that suspended the sentence of Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the former BJP MLA and convict in the Unnao rape case.
The central investigative agency filed a special leave petition, seeking a stay on the High Court judgment. The Delhi High Court had suspended Sengar’s sentence and granted him bail last Tuesday.
The bail came with conditions, including that Sengar must not come within five kilometers of the survivor’s residence and must not meet her. However, after reviewing the High Court order, the CBI approached the Supreme Court, strongly opposing the sentence suspension.
The survivor and her family had protested near India Gate in Delhi against the High Court verdict. Their protest was met with controversy when Delhi Police forcefully removed both the survivor and her mother.
The survivor has alleged that justice has not been served and expressed fear over the convict being released. Sengar had been convicted for abducting and raping a minor girl in 2017.
The case had already sparked widespread discussion after the survivor’s father died in police custody. Now, while serving a life sentence for the crime, Sengar has obtained temporary relief from the High Court, which the CBI is challenging in the Supreme Court.
