New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited LNJP Hospital on Monday evening to meet those injured in a high-intensity blast near the Red Fort metro station. The explosion, which ripped through a slow-moving Hyundai i20 at a traffic signal near the historic site around 6.55 pm, killed at least eight people and damaged several vehicles. 24 others sustained injuries and were rushed to LNJP Hospital, a few kilometres from the blast site.
Hours after the incident, Shah, accompanied by senior police officers and doctors, visited several wards at the hospital and interacted with the injured, offering reassurance and support. He immediately contacted Delhi Police Commissioner and the director of the Intelligence Bureau to take stock of the situation. Shah also directed the National Security Guard (NSG), National Investigation Agency (NIA), and forensic teams to rush to the site to assist in the investigation and collect evidence.
The Union Home Minister briefed that within 10 minutes of receiving information about the explosion, teams from the Delhi Crime Branch and Delhi Special Cell reached the spot. “The blast caused injuries to pedestrians and damage to vehicles. Initial reports indicate that some people lost their lives,” he said. CCTV cameras in the vicinity have been ordered to be examined, and all possibilities are being investigated comprehensively.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. He also spoke with Amit Shah and senior officials to assess the situation and assured that all necessary assistance was being provided to those affected.
Shah added, “Both the Delhi CP and Special Cell in-charge are present at the site. We are taking every angle into account and will present findings to the public. I will personally visit the site soon and also the hospital.”
