New Delhi: In the wake of the US Supreme Court’s stay on additional tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on several countries, including India, the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) has demanded the immediate cancellation of the US–India trade agreement.

The Supreme Court ruled that the tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) were not authorised, stating that the US President does not have the extraordinary power to levy taxes at rates determined solely by the executive. The court emphasised that legislative powers, including taxation, rest with Congress and observed that no previous US President had imposed tariffs on any country’s products using the IEEPA. The ruling underscored concerns over executive overreach in trade matters.

Reacting to the development, AIKS stated that despite the legal challenge in the US, the BJP-led NDA government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had compromised India’s sovereignty by entering into trade agreements that favour American corporate interests. The organisation claimed that the agreement primarily benefits large agribusinesses and wealthy corporate farmers in the United States at the expense of Indian farmers and workers.

In a strongly worded statement, the Kisan Sabha accused the Central government of prioritising big trade and industrial corporations over millions of small and marginal farmers. It criticised what it described as the government’s push for neoliberal reforms and free trade agreements with global powers, including the United States and the European Union, arguing that such policies would open Indian markets to foreign products and adversely affect domestic producers.

The organisation further alleged that the Sangh Parivar and its affiliates have historically aligned with imperialist interests and accused the present leadership of continuing that trajectory.

Calling for nationwide resistance, the Kisan Sabha urged various sections of society to unite against what it termed a “surrender to imperialism” and announced plans to build broader unity among working people to oppose the trade agreement.
