All Feared Dead in Ahmedabad Plane Crash

Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad City Police Commissioner G S Malik has confirmed that all passengers are feared dead after a London -bound Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed into the residential quarters of doctors at BJ Medical College in the Meghaninagar area on Thursday afternoon. The aircraft went down just moments after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
“It appears there are no survivors in the plane crash,” Commissioner Malik told The Associated Press.
The flight was carrying 242 people, including 61 foreign nationals, 53 British citizens, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese nationals. Among the victims was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was reportedly on his way to visit his daughter in London. Among the eight children reported to have boarded the flight were two toddlers.
Also among the deceased was Ranjitha R Nair (39), a Malayali nurse from Kerala. She was a native of Konjon House, Kurunghuzha, Pullad, Kozhencherry in Pathanamthitta district.
Commissioner Malik added that the aircraft crashed in a densely populated area with both residential buildings and offices. “Some locals would have also died. Exact figures on casualties are being ascertained,” he said.
The crash, which occurred shortly after midday, has left a trail of destruction and grief in the heart of the city.
