Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday described the postponement of Nimisha Priya’s execution in Yemen as a “relief” and a “hopeful development.” Nimisha, an Indian nurse, was sentenced to death in Yemen in connection with a murder case.

In a statement, the Chief Minister said the latest decision has granted her more time to pursue legal options for clemency. “This offers a window of opportunity for her to secure relief from the death sentence,” Vijayan said.

The Chief Minister credited the development to the intervention and initiative of Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar. “It is the result of tireless efforts by individuals moved by compassion and fraternity,” he said.

Vijayan also congratulated Kanthapuram and members of the Action Council working for Nimisha Priya’s release. He expressed hope that their collective efforts would soon lead to a complete resolution in the case.

Nimisha Priya has been on death row in Yemen since being convicted for the 2017 murder of a Yemeni national. Human rights groups and community organisations have been campaigning for her release, citing humanitarian grounds and legal irregularities.
