Live News Nepal-Tibet Flash Floods: Death Toll Rises to 626, Over 2,400 Missing

Kathmandu: The death toll from devastating flash floods on the Nepal-Tibet border has risen to at least 626, with more than 2,400 people still missing, Nepal Police officials informed, as rescue crews and military helicopters continues searching mountainous terrain buried under mud and rock. The disaster struck Wednesday after a suspected ice-rock avalanche, which sent a torrent of water, ice and debris down the Bhote Koshi river basin, tearing through villages in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Gorkha districts and severing roads and bridges. Authorities have warned the toll will likely climb further as communication with remote areas remains cut off.

Officials say two lakes formed by landslides upstream are now overflowing and at risk of bursting, raising fears of fresh flooding as more rain is forecast in the coming week. More than 4,300 security personnel, along with army helicopters, are engaged in search and rescue, airlifting survivors, including children, to safety at military camps.

Among the missing are hundreds of foreign nationals, including workers, pilgrims and tourists, alongside thousands of displaced local residents. Aid organisations are racing to deliver emergency shelter, food and medical support as the humanitarian toll continues to mount across the affected border region.
