Kochi: The Business Jet Terminal at Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), country’s first dedicated charter gateway, has crossed a major milestone by handling over 2,000 charter and private jet operations within just 34  months of its commissioning.

According to CIAL authorities, the terminal managed 344 chartered services in the current fiscal year alone, indicating sustained growth since its launch in December 2022. The airport handled 242 flights in 2022–23, which rose to 708 in 2023–24, and currently stands at 714 flights in 2024–25.

The upcoming sixth edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, scheduled to open in December, along with the annual Sabarimala pilgrimage season, is expected to contribute to a further increase in private aviation activity through the terminal.

Chartered flights arriving at the terminal originate from several international destinations including London, Hong Kong, Maldives, Montenegro, and the Gulf countries, as well as major Indian cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, and Tirupati.

CIAL officials noted that the terminal's streamlined services—designed to allow passengers to disembark and reach their vehicles within two minutes—have made it a preferred destination for high-net-worth individuals (HNIs), corporate travelers, and premium tourists.

Inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in December 2022, the Rs. 30-crore terminal is the first of its kind in India, offering facilities tailored exclusively for charter and private jet operations. With an area of approximately 40,000 square feet, it includes a drive-in porch, executive lounges, business centres, duty-free retail, immigration and customs counters, aircraft parking, and a secure “safe-house” area.

The terminal also incorporates cultural elements such as Kathakali sculptures and paintings inspired by the Navarasas, including works based on Kalamandalam Gopi’s interpretations.

The facility has seen notable moments in recent months, including the arrival of a Boeing 737 with 58 passengers via charter. During the G20 meetings in Lakshadweep in 2023, CIAL also served as a key landing point for delegations arriving via private aircraft.

The terminal is part of CIAL’s broader strategic expansion, which includes a dedicated international cargo terminal, improved MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) facilities, and plans for a five-star airport hotel.

CIAL, which is the world’s first fully solar-powered airport, continues to set benchmarks in sustainable aviation and passenger experience.
