Aroma Chundan Wins 72nd Nehru Trophy Boat Race, Claims Maiden Title

Alappuzha: Aroma Chundan emerged champion in the thrilling 72nd Nehru Trophy Boat Race held at Punnamada Lake. Rowed by the Aroma Boat Club from Kollam, Aroma Chundan produced an impressive performance in the final to lift the title. It is the first Nehru Trophy victory in Aroma’s history.


Aroma Chundan competed from Track 3 in the final. Mylappadam Chundan, rowed by Pallathuruthy Boat Club, was on Track 1, while Vee­yapuram Chundan, rowed by UBC Kainakary FC, competed from Track 2. Nadubhagam Chundan, rowed by PBC Punnamada, was on Track 4 and battled Aroma for the title.


Based on their timings, Mylappadam Chundan had emerged as the fastest boat, completing the race in 4 minutes 15.492 seconds. Nadubhagam finished in 4minutes 16 seconds, Vee­yapuram in 4 minutes 20 seconds and Aroma in 4 minutes 26 seconds.


However, Aroma Chundan overturned the calculations in the final and emerged as the ‘King of the Waters’. Winning the battle for its maiden title, Aroma etched its name into the history of the Nehru Trophy.


The competitions leading up to the final were also marked by intense contests. Thalavady Chundan won the second losers’ final, while Niranam Chundan emerged victorious in the losers’ final.


A total of 71 boats competed in this year’s Nehru Trophy, including 22 chundan boats. The remaining boats competed in categories such as churulan, iruttukuthi A, B and C, and veppu A and B.


Aroma’s victory has given the Nehru Trophy a new champion this year. From its performance in the heats to its title-winning display in the final, Aroma Chundan scripted a historic victory at Punnamada.
