Vinesh Phogat Raises Alarm Over Bias Ahead of Comeback Tournament, Reveals She is One of the Complainant in Brij Bhushan Singh Case

New Delhi: Olympic wrestler and Congress MLA Vinesh Phogat issued a stark warning to the Indian government ahead of her competitive return after nearly 18 months, saying it would be held accountable for any harm to her or her team at the National Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda — a venue she described as firmly within the sphere of influence of former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

In a video message, Phogat — one of six women wrestlers who filed sexual harassment complaints against Singh, a case still being heard in court with witness examination ongoing — said competing at a venue tied to the accused created enormous psychological pressure. "I am one of the six women wrestlers who filed complaints. Competing at a place linked to him, where most people present may be associated with him, puts immense mental pressure on me," she said, adding she doubted whether she could give her full effort in such an environment.

She raised specific concerns about the integrity of officiating, alleging that Singh's proximity to the venue gave him potential influence over bout assignments, points awarded and the selection of mat chairman. "If any untoward incident happens to me, my team or supporters during the competition, the Indian government will be responsible," she said, calling on media and the sporting community to ensure transparency through their presence.

Phogat, who competes in the 57kg category in Gonda — a departure from the 50kg and 53kg divisions she previously contested — said she sought no special treatment, only a level playing field. "I don't want any privilege. I only want results to reflect the hard work of athletes on the mat," she added, accusing the sports ministry of watching events unfold as "spectators" while giving Singh a "free hand."

Phogat has been absent from competition since the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she was disqualified from the final for being overweight.
