Oath-Taking of Tamil Nadu MLAs Today; Governor Directs Confidence Vote in Assembly by Wednesday

Chennai: A new political era is set to formally begin in Tamil Nadu today as newly elected members of the Legislative Assembly are set to take oath following the rise of Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to power.

Pro-tem Speaker Karuppiah will administer the oath to the newly elected MLAs during the Assembly session. The election for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker posts is scheduled for tomorrow, while Governor Rajendra Arlekar has directed the new government to seek a confidence vote in the House by Wednesday.

Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister on Sunday during a grand ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. The oath of office was administered by Rajendra Arlekar, who currently holds the additional charge of Governor of Tamil Nadu.

Along with Vijay, nine ministers also assumed office. The swearing-in ceremony witnessed the presence of several prominent personalities from both the film industry and political circles, while supporters across the State celebrated the transition enthusiastically.

The formation of the new government brings an end to days of political uncertainty and negotiations following the Assembly election results. Although TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, it fell short of a clear majority. The deadlock ended after allies of DMK extended support to Vijay.

Parties backing the coalition government include the CPI(M), CPI, VCK, and Congress.
