Vijay Signs Key Policy Decisions After Assuming Tamil Nadu CM's Office

Chennai: A new political chapter began in Tamil Nadu on Sunday as Vijay formally took oath as Chief Minister, ending decades of dominance by the State’s two traditional Dravidian powerhouses — the DMK and the AIADMK.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at the packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, where Acting Governor Rajendra Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay and nine Ministers. Thousands of supporters gathered at the venue, celebrating the actor-turned-politician’s rise to power with chants, cheers, and waving party flags. Senior political leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, were present for the ceremony.

Vijay’s ascent to the top post came after the TVK secured the support of 121 legislators in the 234-member Assembly. The party crossed the majority mark with backing from parties including the VCK, IUML, Congress, CPI(M) and the CPI.

Soon after assuming office, the new Chief Minister signed a series of key policy decisions that reflected the administration’s immediate priorities. One of the first measures approved was a scheme offering 200 units of free electricity to domestic consumers, aimed at easing household financial burdens. Another order sanctioned the creation of a dedicated anti-drug enforcement wing to tackle narcotics-related crimes and addiction among youth.

The government also announced the formation of a specialised women’s safety force, with Vijay asserting that ensuring security and protection for women would remain a major focus of his administration.

Nine ministers were sworn in alongside Vijay. The cabinet includes senior party functionaries, first-time legislators, former bureaucrats, and experienced politicians who joined TVK from rival parties. Among them are 'Bussy' Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, K. A. Sengottaiyan, and Selvi S. Keerthana, who is set to become the youngest member of the new cabinet.

Meanwhile, the Vijay-led government has to prove its majority on the floor of the Assembly on or before May 13.
