Vijay's Security Cover Scaled Down Amid Uncertainty Over TVK' Government Bid

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Police have withdrawn the enhanced security cover and convoy facilities that had recently been extended to Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Official sources said the special arrangements—reportedly comparable to the Z-plus security protocol accorded to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu—were scaled down on Wednesday night after uncertainty emerged over the party’s bid to form the government.

Following TVK’s emergence as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Vijay had met Governor Rajendra Arlekar to stake claim to form the government. TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, falling short of the 118 required for a simple majority. Reports indicate that the Governor was not convinced the party had the necessary numbers and asked TVK leaders to furnish letters of support from allied parties.

Security around Vijay’s residence and party headquarters had been significantly tightened after early counting trends on May 4 pointed towards a major electoral breakthrough for TVK. While police initially stated that the measures were intended to manage massive crowds of supporters and party workers, the level of protection provided was widely seen as equivalent to that given to a sitting Chief Minister.

At present, Vijay continues to receive Y-category security sanctioned by the Central Government. Personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) remain responsible for his personal security during travel and at his residence. In addition, he continues to be protected by private security personnel and receives assistance from local police during public appearances and political events.
