Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has ordered the closure of liquor outlets located within 500 metres of schools, places of worship, and bus stands shortly after assuming office.

The directive will lead to the shutdown of 717 outlets operated by TASMAC, the state-run liquor retail network.

According to the order, 186 outlets situated near schools, 276 near religious institutions, and 255 close to bus stands will be closed. Officials have been instructed to implement the decision within two weeks.

Tamil Nadu currently has a total of 4,765 TASMAC outlets across the state. The move is being viewed as one of the first major policy decisions of the new government under Vijay’s leadership.
