New Delhi: Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam president Vijay is likely to be named as an accused in the case related to the tragedy that occurred during the party’s rally in Karur, sources said. The CBI is preparing to charge him with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and the charge sheet is expected to be filed in February.

According to the agency, the explanations given by Vijay during questioning were not found to be satisfactory. This includes his response regarding the delay in reaching the venue of the programme on the day of the rally. Based on its assessment so far, the CBI is considering naming him as an accused in the case.

At present, Vijay is listed as a witness. He appeared at the CBI headquarters in New Delhi today for a second round of questioning, which is continuing. He had earlier appeared before the agency for questioning last week as part of the ongoing probe.

The incident took place on September 27, 2025 during a rally attended by Vijay in Karur. Forty-one people lost their lives in a stampede caused by heavy crowding at the venue. Investigators have pointed to serious lapses in organisation as the reason for the tragedy.

After the incident, Vijay left the venue and returned to Chennai by chartered aircraft later that night. He later shared a condolence message on social media. However, his actions triggered widespread criticism and protests.
