New Delhi: Despite the Prime Minister’s recent visit, peace has still not been restored in Manipur. Two Assam Rifles jawans were killed and five others seriously injured in an attack on a paramilitary convoy.
The incident occurred around 5:40 pm on Friday in the Nampol Sabal Laikei area of Bishnupur district. Attackers opened fire on the truck carrying the Assam Rifles personnel. The security forces were traveling from Imphal to Bishnupur at the time. The injured jawans were rushed to nearby hospitals by locals and security personnel.
Earlier on Thursday, security forces had arrested several militants in three districts of Imphal and seized weapons from them. Large- scale unrest had previously occurred in Manipur, and Prime Minister Modi had visited the state last Saturday, marking his first visit in 27 months. Following his visit, pro -government media had suggested that normalcy would return to Manipur.
However, the major attack on security forces exposes the fragility of such claims. Friday’s attack underscores that, even under President’s rule, Manipur continues to be a hotspot of conflict.
