Chennai: Ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Election Commission has allotted election symbols to the political parties led by actors Vijay and Kamal Haasan. Vijay’s Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has been assigned the whistle symbol, while Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has been allotted the battery torch symbol.

The Central Election Commission approved applications for common symbols submitted by registered but unrecognised political parties.

The allotment has been made in accordance with the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968. Common symbols will be granted to parties contesting elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. However, parties will lose their allotted symbol if they fail to secure victories in at least five percent of the total Assembly constituencies. In constituencies where such parties do not field candidates, the symbol may be allotted to others as a free symbol.

Political parties have stepped up preparations for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Makkal Needhi Maiam, led by Kamal Haasan, is allied with the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). For Vijay’s TVK, the forthcoming election is expected to be a crucial political test.
