Supreme Court to Hear Petition Against Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sharma Over Alleged Hate Speech

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has agreed to consider another petition filed against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma regarding hate speech targeted at Muslim communities. The petition was accepted by a bench headed by Chief Justice Suryakanth.

The new petition was filed by retired professor Hiran Gohein, Assam ex-DGP Harekrishna Deka, senior journalist Paresh Chandra Malakar, and senior advocate Shantanu Borthakur. It alleges that Biswa Sharma, through his speeches and social media interventions, has called for discrimination and socio-economic boycotting of Bengali Muslims.

Previously, the Supreme Court had also considered a similar petition submitted by CPI leader Aani Raja. The petition from the left leaders concerned a controversial video of the Chief Minister holding a gun. Advocate Rupali Samuel, appearing for the petitioners, argued that the new petition should be considered along with the previous one.

The main allegations in the petition include that the Chief Minister is using derogatory terms such as “Miya” and “Bangladeshi” against Assam Muslims and is creating hatred in the name of religion and language.
