Supreme Court to Hear CBI Appeal Today Against Bail to Kuldeep Sengar in Unnao Rape Case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear today the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) appeal in the Unnao rape case, which had sparked nationwide outrage. The vacation bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Suryakant, will take up the matter. The CBI filed the appeal following widespread protests against the Delhi High Court’s order staying the sentence of convicted BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar and granting him bail.
Meanwhile, the survivor has repeatedly alleged that the Delhi High Court’s decision to suspend Sengar’s sentence was the result of the CBI adopting a stance favourable to the convict. Speaking to the media earlier during her protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, the survivor said she has full faith in the Supreme Court and firmly believes justice will be delivered there.
“If the CBI had taken a strict stand earlier, I would have received justice. The man who raped me would not have been granted bail. He killed my father and other family members, withdrew security provided to my family and witnesses, and my husband was removed from his job. His release poses a threat even to the lives of my children,” she said.
The survivor’s mother also joined the protest. Recently, the survivor met senior CBI officials and submitted a complaint containing serious allegations, including claims that the investigating officer extended undue assistance to Kuldeep Sengar. She further alleged that the investigating officer and his colleagues were in frequent communication with Sengar’s daughter.
Kuldeep Singh Sengar was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019 in the Unnao rape case.
