SFI to Intensify Protest Against Rising Sexual Assaults in Delhi

New Delhi: The Students' Federation of India (SFI) will continue its strong protests amid the increasing number of rape cases in Delhi. SFI state secretary Suraj Elamon said at a press conference that the organisation would march to the Delhi Secretariat on Wednesday, mobilising hundreds of students.

Thirteen women were subjected to sexual assault in Delhi in September alone, he said.

The march will demand comprehensive measures to prevent recurring attacks against girls. SFI will also demand the installation of CCTV cameras, streetlights and pink booths on campuses and in areas surrounding campuses in Delhi. Suraj said the organisation would intensify its struggle in the coming days to ensure the safety of girls in Delhi.

SFI Delhi state joint secretary Meheena Fathima said attacks against girls were continuing in a state governed by a woman Chief Minister from the BJP. The BJP is also in power at the Centre and in the Delhi municipal administration. She alleged that the BJP has consistently taken positions supporting perpetrators of violence, which she said was evident in the case involving Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh as well.

Meheena said girls who approached police stations to file complaints after facing attacks had bad experiences. She alleged that the police were not even willing to register their complaints. She said contacting the DCP also yielded no result. It was in this situation that the march to the Secretariat was being organised to bring the issues directly to the attention of the authorities.

Meheena Fathima said that when girls protest against sexual assault and other forms of violence, the Sangh Parivar labels them as anti-national, while girls who are victims of rape are described as the daughters of India.
