Opposition Protests Amit Shah's Absence, Both Houses of Parliament Adjourned Amid Opposition Uproar

New Delhi: Parliament witnessed fresh disruptions Tuesday as opposition members kept up pressure on the government, gathering at the entrance in the morning to demand that Union Home Minister Amit Shah appear before the House and explain the police brutality on students who had protested the NEET question paper leak.

Inside the chamber, opposition members also pressed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a response regarding the alleged Ayodhya donation fraud case.

Amid mounting demands, Home Minister Amit Shah said he was willing to answer every question the opposition wished to raise, stating he would be present in Parliament from 3 pm Wednesday until 3 pm Thursday for that purpose.

The reply comes days after facing criticisms over the Union Home minister's absence in the Parliament, even during the presentation of important bills including Keralam Bill and Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill. Meanwhile, the confrontation between the government and opposition over the NEET protests and the subsequent police action continues to escalate, an issue that has repeatedly brought parliamentary business to a standstill, with opposition leaders insisting Shah personally take up the matter in the House.

Earlier in the day, opposition leaders staged a demonstration outside Parliament, raising slogans of "Amit Shah Jawab Do" and directing their criticism at the Home Minister over claims that police used excessive force against student protesters in Delhi and other states.

Row over "lungiwala" jibe disrupts Rajya Sabha

A separate controversy unfolded in the Rajya Sabha, where Left MPs protested against BJP MP Sushmita Dev over comments she had made a day earlier, insulting MP John Brittas by referring to him as "lungiwala" while he spoke in the House. Brittas said he took pride in his Malayali identity and was hurt that a fellow member had insulted him in this way. The Chair ruled in response that no culture should be subjected to insult within the House.

Following the ensuing uproar, Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned until 2 pm. In protest against the remark, opposition MPs turned up in the House on Tuesday wearing 'mundu' and also demonstrated at Parliament's entrance.
