New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has come under criticism after sharply attacking the INDIA alliance’s protest against the BJP government in Parliament. In a column published in the national daily Indian Express, Tharoor openly questioned the opposition bloc’s strategy, triggering debate within political circles.

Tharoor, who has often taken positions divergent from his party, went a step further in his latest remarks by criticising the functioning of the entire opposition in Parliament. He mocked the INDIA alliance’s decision to withhold cooperation in parliamentary proceedings until a discussion on the SIR issue is allowed, dismissing it as the opposition’s “routine programme” of disrupting Parliament.

What has drawn attention is that the MP chose to fault the opposition even as the Centre continues to reject repeated demands for a structured discussion on the SIR issue. Instead of holding the government accountable, Tharoor’s article frames the opposition as the reason for the continuing deadlock. At a time when the alliance alleges a coordinated effort by the BJP to avoid scrutiny, Tharoor is seen directing criticism at the very group pressing for parliamentary debate and democratic rights.

In the article, Tharoor further argues that the opposition is responsible for Parliament’s inability to function, a stance that has sparked displeasure within sections of his own party and the wider alliance.
