LPG Gas Crisis: Kolkata's Historic Bakery Shuts Down Over LPG Shortage

Kolkata: The historic Nahoum & Sons bakery in Kolkata has temporarily shut down due to an LPG shortage. Established over 120 years ago, it is the city’s only Jewish bakery and a well-known landmark in New Market.

This marks the first such closure for the bakery, except during the COVID-19 lockdown and in 2013 following the death of its owner, David Nahoum.

The shutdown has been attributed to disruptions in LPG supply caused by the ongoing West Asian conflict, which has affected shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, the bakery will remain closed for five days, from March 18 to March 22, and is expected to reopen on March 23.

Authorities stated that the shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has severely impacted production, making it difficult to continue operations under the current circumstances.

Nahoum & Sons is renowned for its signature offerings, including plum cakes, lemon tarts, brownies, almond macaroons, and fish patties, making it a beloved institution among locals and visitors alike.
