TMC Workers Unleash Attack on AUJP Chief, Workers in Murshidabad Amid West Bengal Polls

Murshidabad: Trinamool Congress workers launched a brazen attack on Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AUJP) founder Humayun Kabir and his supporters in West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Thursday, as Phase 1 of the state assembly elections descended into violence.

TMC workers were seen raising slogans against Kabir as soon as he arrived in the area, which triggered an altercation. The confrontation erupted when Kabir visited Nowda to inspect the site of a crude bomb attack from the previous night.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos, with locals running for safety. According to reports, one of the injured told PTI that the attackers were hurling abuses before launching the assault, adding that the victims had no prior involvement in any confrontation.

It has been reported that a woman was injured in a crude bomb blast in Nowda, Murshidabad district the previous night. Additionally, reports emerged that TMC workers allegedly captured booths in the Domkal area and opposition cadre reportedly targeted, forcing polling to be halted at affected booths.

The Election Commission sought a report from the District Magistrate and District Election Officer on the Nowda tension.

Humayun Kabir, an MLA from Murshidabad's Bharatpur constituency, had formed his own party after being suspended from the TMC in December last year following his proposal for the construction of a Babri-like mosque. Defiant in the face of the attack, Kabir vowed, "I won't leave until people vote peacefully," he declared. "In Murshidabad there won't be anything as Trinamool — there is only hooliganism."
